Moruya Public School (MPS) and Moruya High School (MHS) are committed to fostering a seamless transition for our Aboriginal students from primary to high school. By implementing engaging activities and strategies, we can create a supportive environment that not only eases this transition but also strengthens community ties. Here are some impactful strategies and activities to support our goals:
1. Regular MHS AEO Presence
Aunty Lisa Rowley has been a cornerstone to building stronger connections and enhancing the transition for Aboriginal students by attending MPS events, organising high school visits, organising high school student involvement and nurturing relationships with students, families, and staff. Her involvement also includes:
Attending Aboriginal Student Voice meetings
Attending Yarn-Up Afternoon Teas
Engaging in our NAIDOC Week celebrations.
2. High School Visits
Beyond the regular transition program, our Aboriginal Student Voice members visit MHS for:
Guided tours and interactions with current high school students.
Early connections with Year 5 students to pave the way for a smoother transition.
Past activities have included:
Participation in MHS NAIDOC Week events, such as the Koori Cook Off
Celebrating the official opening of the Yarning and Dance Circles, bushtucker garden, and outdoor classroom
Inviting our students to perform the ochre dance at their MAD matinee session.
3. High School Student Involvement
MHS students actively participate in MPS activities, fostering peer connections through:
NAIDOC Week, where they assist and engage in various events.
Mentoring, such as with the Clontarf Team, and in a collaborative performance at the Far South Coast Dance Festival.
Attendance at our Aboriginal Student Voice meetings.
4. Clontarf Program
The Clontarf Team has played a vital role in connecting with students and parents through:
Organising engaging activities at both Moruya Public School and Moruya High School
Attendance at Yarn-Up Afternoon Teas.
5. Parent and Community Engagement
Strengthening relationships within our community is key. Aunty Lisa and the Clontarf Team attend:
Yarn-Up Afternoon Teas, providing vital information and support for parents and community members, enhancing our collective strength.
