Our dhurga Language Program

Student Program

Since 2020, Moruya Public School has proudly included dhurga (the local Aboriginal language) Language Program in its curriculum for all students in Years 4 to 6. This initiative is held weekly on Wednesdays and is designed to promote inclusiveness and cultural understanding among students.

The dhurga Language Program is not just for Aboriginal students; it offers every student the opportunity to engage with and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the dhurga-speaking people. By participating in this program, students are able to:

  • Understand and Respect Aboriginal Culture: Learning the dhurga language helps students appreciate the traditions, stories, and practices of the local Aboriginal community.

  • Enhance Communication Skills: Students develop their language skills, which can improve their overall literacy and communication abilities.

  • Build Social Cohesion: Engaging with diverse cultures fosters respect and understanding among peers, promoting a sense of community.

Community Program

In addition to the school program, a community class is offered for all parents and members of the wider community, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. This initiative provides a platform for families to come together and learn the dhurga language, creating opportunities for:

  • Cultural Exchange: Parents and community members gain insights into Aboriginal culture, fostering dialogue and mutual respect.

  • Shared Learning Experiences: Participating in classes together strengthens community bonds and encourages collaborative learning.

  • Support for Students: Parents who engage in the language program can better support their children’s learning at home, reinforcing the importance of cultural education.

We invite all parents and community members to participate and support this meaningful initiative.

If you are interested in attending our community session, they are held every Wednesday from 2.15pm to 3pm in our school library.  All are welcome!

Benefits of Learning an Aboriginal Language

The dhurga Language Program offers numerous benefits for all participants, including:

  • Cultural Appreciation: Students and community members gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal history and culture, promoting respect for Aboriginal peoples and their contributions.

  • Cognitive Development: Learning a new language enhances cognitive skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

  • Empowerment: By learning dhurga, students and community members contribute to the preservation and revitalisation of Aboriginal languages, empowering themselves and future generations.

Through the dhurga Language Program, Moruya Public School is fostering a rich learning environment that values diversity, promotes inclusiveness, and builds strong community connections.

Our Language Teacher

Mrs. Kerry Boyenga's journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to education and the revitalisation of the dhurga language. As a proud Brinja Yuin woman, her roots in Moruya inspire her work in various educational roles over the past 30 years.

Her diverse experience as an Aboriginal Education Assistant, Learning Support Officer, Aboriginal Liaison Officer, and educator in both public and Catholic systems showcases her dedication to education. Now, as a dhurga Language Teacher, she plays a crucial role in preserving and teaching the dhurga language.

The collaborative effort with her siblings to develop the dhurga dictionary is a significant milestone in language preservation, providing vital resources for learners and educators alike. By teaching the dhurga language at TAFE and across multiple schools, including Moruya Public School, Mrs. Boyenga not only enriches the curriculum but also fosters a deeper connection to Aboriginal culture among students.

Her work is incredibly inspirational, serving as a model for integrating Aboriginal perspectives into education and promoting language and cultural heritage within the broader community.
